Up and Running Again partners with the Bowery Mission Women’s Program in Harlem—the 3rd oldest rescue mission in the US. Despite a record blizzard, eager residents began training in February 2026. The team prepares for the Soul Ryeders half marathon on May 17, proving they’re capable of more than they ever imagined.
These days, Hernandez, who says he is four years sober, is running for a different reason. If all goes to plan, he and seven other Wayside Cross residents will toe the line at the Fox Valley half-marathon in St. Charles, Illinois, in a few weeks — with hopes of finishing the 13.1-mile race.
Tom McCall had never been a runner before drug addiction and a subsequent arrest landed him in the Dixon Correctional Center in Illinois. But on that dusty makeshift track, in circles that inmates approximated to be about a quarter-mile, McCall, an honorably discharged veteran and onetime successful businessman, began his journey toward a new life.
Tom McCall admitted his legs “are doing better but still sore” when we spoke on Wednesday. Two days earlier the 54-year-old Aurora man had run the Boston Marathon, clocking in at a personal best of 3:09:37. Which in itself is plenty of reason to celebrate.
From addiction to Boston Marathon qualifier, veteran Tom McCall found redemption through running after prison, proving it’s never too late for transformation.
